Paris Pocket Guide

Images Of Paris

One of the first things you notice when you walk around Paris is this: the French capital is just as you imagine it. Parisians lounge outside cafés drinking coffee, budding artists sketch whatever passes them into their sketch pads, and everywhere you look is another building which causes an immediate reaction to grab for your camera. Some of the world's best museums can be found here, the list of instantly recognisable landmarks is a lengthy one, and the nightlife is electric to say the least. But one of the French capital's best attributes is that when you want to do nothing but sit back and relax, it's hard to think of a better city in the world to people watch.

Paris City Reviews

    Paris in July

I heard that all Parisiens were kind of rude but I was proved otherwise. Right when we got to the city, two different people came to offer advise with direction without even asking. Also lugging suitcases around metro stations, we got a lot of help from the locals. Bonjour and merci, au revoir will get you far. :) Reserve at least two weeks in Paris if you want to see all the sights (Louvre alone is 16 km of art!). A metro card is really useful when getting around the city.

Insider Tip:Download a Paris metro map on your phone, it's a life-saver! I used both the Visit Paris by metro app (by RATP) and the Metro Paris Subway app (by Presselite). Both were good and also gave route suggestions. Most importantly, they worked offline! The five zones Paris visitè card will get you to and from Charles de Gaulle airport as well as around Paris and even to Versailles!

    Expensive but excellent

I love Paris. It's got everything you want, a real bustling city vibe but then the continental bar style of life, tourist icons everywhere and gorgeous architecture round every corner. There is not enough time in the world to 'do' Paris.

Insider Tip:Don't forget (especially in summer) how hot, sweaty and draining Paris can be - stock up plenty on ice and water from supermarkets, which are by far cheaper than street vendors.

Probably my least favourite city that we visited. I thought Paris was very unclean and some areas (particularly around the Sacre Coeur) were not that safe. However, the tourist attractions are fab and there is definitely another side to Paris which I did enjoy.

Insider Tip:Do not stay in accommodation near the Sacre Coeur!

Extremely expensive but a must see! It can be done in one night, two days ... but be ready to be busy. The tour bus that allows you to get on/off at various stops is the best, or the boat along the Siene River, will allow you see most of the city within a few hours/day.
