RECORD VOLVO. What kind of car should you buy if you plan an exceptionally long drive?

Answer: A Swedish Volvo P1800 from 1966.

Irvin Gordon, 72, from Long Island, New York, has driven his Volvo all over for 46 years. He has had coffee in every U.S. state, he claims. And the Volvo is still running. The P1800S has rolled over 2,9 million U.S. miles (more than 4 million kilometers). He expects to hit the 3 million miles mark somewhere, sometime new year.

“It’s just a car I enjoy driving,” he said to the Associated Press.

He bought the car new June 30, 1966, and has held the Guinness World of Records mark for High Mileage Vehicle since 2002, being the first person to hold that record. His odometer doesn’t have enough digits to display the actual mileage, AP reports, but Irvin Gordon has tune-up records verifying it.

The odometer hasn’t got enough digits.

He has been taking road trips since he was a kid and continued through his adult years. He says he would just tell his family to pack their things and hit the road, Irvin Gordon told the AP.

Irv averages 85,000 to 100,000 miles per year. Most of his trips are for auto shows, but he also takes trips across the country just for a good cup of coffee, he said to the AP.

And he has no plans of selling his beloved Volvo.

“Why would I want to get rid of it? (It is) kind of like a good woman,” he tolt the Associated Press.
