Berlin’s new airport postpones opening
FLIGHTS. Berlin’s new major airport, the Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport, scheduled to open this summer, has been hit with a major setback as the new facilities have been deemed unsafe. Measures regarding fire protection have not been met, and Berlin’s airport chief Rainer Schwartz calls the setback a “bitter disappointment”, Bloomberg, among others, reports.
Berlin’s both other airports, Tegel and Schönefeld, will manage the flights scheduled for the Willy Brandt airport, which now aims to open for business this fall.
The setback for Berlin’s airport investment poses a big embarrassment for the city. Last year – one year ahead of the planned inauguration of the airport – Berlin officials uncovered a grand statue (picture) on the airport’s premises, along with a press release which stated “The big moment is getting closer. In only one year the new airport for the region around Germany’s capital city opens: Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt.”
